Grey hat SEO techniques are employed by a sizable n umber of search engine optimization experts to boost their sites’ and that of their clients’ ranking. It isn’t everybody that welcomes this development of the use of these ‘tricks’ to deceive search engines and spring with easy ranking. There are always two sides to it, you either succeed sometimes and get highly ranks or you get severely punished by the search engines if you grossly go against their stipulated ethics. Some go to the extent of calling these search engine ranking techniques pure ‘SEO spamming and if you had been online for awhile you would agree with me here that search engines really frown at the word ‘spamming’ and would spare no rod in dealing with any site caught in any of such practice.
On the other hand, white hat SEO techniques are the most acceptable forms of search engine optimization techniques. It is acceptable to web owners, web visitors and search engines as well. Its unique principle is based on content and absolutely unique contents. It isn’t as controversial as grey hat SEO techniques and proves to be more reliable in the long run for proper ranking than the later. The later may give some kind of immediate high ranking but the fear of being discovered and punished by the search engines is always there and sometimes becomes real.
Some ‘gurus’ or experts use the following dark hat techniques for their search engine optimization
campaigns.
Links are important in any search engine optimization quest by it shouldn’t be gotten indiscriminately. Some SEO experts get paid links to boost their sites’ search engine ranking. If such links are for advertisement purposes, it may be accepted but when the primary aim is just to fool the search engines, you need to be reminded that they can’t be fooled for a long time and wouldn’t hesitate to raise the big rod on your site soon as your are discovered.
Another deceitful method applied by some SEO experts is website cloaking. This when the site is cloaked in such a way that the information the search engine will be ‘seeing’ or reading will be entire different from what is actually contained in such site. Some SEO experts carefully use this method to deceive the search engines and get the much needed traffic to their sites but its deceptive nature makes prune for search engines penalty.
One of the most commonly error of the majority of websites on the internet today is the issue of duplicate content. While it has been agued that some form of duplication is allowed and as such legitimate, you would definitely stand out if you can create only original and unique content for your website. If you are pursuing search engine ranking, it is always best if you can stay far as possible from contents that had already been published on others sites.
You can use various legitimate means to get your site highly ranked by search engines by ensure that you stay away from the above grey hat SEO techniques

If I'm building a site that I'm planning on having around for awhile, I'm not going to try and trick the SE's. It's not worth it. There are plenty of legit ways to get ranking, it may take a little longer, but I know I'll be safe. Thanks for the great article.

Great points. But let's not forget that as important as SEO is, the ultimate goal is to appeal to your human visitors. Whether you are offering unique content or occasionally reposting others' articles, do be sure that your information is informative, interesting and relevant to the human readers your are trying to attract.
It's also a great idea to proofread before posting (or hire an editor to do it for you.) Misspellings and poorly constructed sentences reflect poorly on your brand and may result in visitors clicking away prematurely - thus rendering all your careful SEO efforts useless! |

Hi Mike,
I have gone through your article above and have one question. If you are promoting a service or product as an affiliate or re-seller, how does one overcome the challange of duplicate content since all the other affiliates or re-sellers are basically selling the same things and which carry the same names and description? I am referring to your sentence above which reads in part: "...........you would definitely stand out if you can create only original and unique content for your website. If you are pursuing search engine ranking, it is always best if you can stay far as possible from contents that had already been published on others sites" Thank you! Tom |
