Working from home can be difficult if you are used to working with others in a business environment. You may wonder how you can conquer feelings of alienation and loneliness when you are working at home. There are many tips and sites devoted to loneliness when working from a home based environment. Keep in mind some people may need to work in a structured business setting where there are lots of people to keep them from feeling lonely. Some people do not like the politics that take place in an office between colleagues and employers. There are many different reasons for why people want to work at home. You have to decide what is best for you and figure if you will be lonely if you decide to work at home. Some people do not mind having feelings of loneliness while others are irked when they have too much alone time.
If you work for an outside business in your home you can use the business as a source of comfort when you feel the need for help. You can contact the employer and discuss ideas with them. This may make you feel like you are part of their work team. If you have your own business you can find websites that have chats that allow you to find help and talk to others that may be feeling lonely. You may be able to connect with the people
outside of the website and make a new a business alliance.
Another idea is to engage in an organization that allows you to have someone who shows you the ropes of the business. This person will help you when you need them. This person is a source of knowledge and comfort when there are tough decisions to deal with. You also will not feel lonely if you have someone that you know is within a phone call away from you.
Through websites and chat sites that are related to people that work from home, one may meet people and be able to go out and share ideas. You may be able to work together on a project. You may also be able to just meet up and socialize outside of the house if you are feeling overwhelmed or lonely.
There may be times where you feel alienated from society or just lack motivation to work due to losing interest from time to time. This is common and can be dealt with by working with the company you are working with. If you work for yourself you may want to find connections through the internet, where you can discuss working at home with others in similar positions. You can also go out and get some fresh air with someone who feels the same way about their work at home experience (i.e. lonely or bored). Research what working at home will be like before you decide if it would be appropriate for your interests.

If a person is very much used to the normal office type of working environment, I think there should be a little transition period to make way for some adjustments...

i know most people don't understand how different it is working from home. they think you lay around all day and do nothing, but on the contrary, you work hard and don't have others around to distract you or keep you company. i think it's good to get out and socialize, but remember you work from home to avoid commuting, sucky bosses, and being trapped in a cubicle. i guess you have to try it out to see if it's right for you and your family.

It's human nature to need to interact with other people. Working from home I've found that if I do a few days straight working alone, you do start to feel very alone. As such I try to schedule short activities each day which make you get out and interact - to break up the isolation a bit. Means that I'm more focused when I am working.
But overall it's a much better solution - can get a lot more done without the usual distractions caused by others. |
