You can learn how to install Joomla on your website in a number of ways. However, the simplest and by far, the quickest is through Fantastico. This usually takes about 1-2 minutes once you know how. In this article, we are going to cover just that.
So, here is the step by step process for installing Joomla on your own website.
1. Log in to your hosting account's Control Panel. This should usually be http://www.mydomainname.com/controlpanel, where 'mydomainnane' is replaced your own website that is hosted on that hosting account.
2. Look for the smiley icon that says "Fantastico" and click on it. This is where you will be installing the Joomla package from. Note that Sometimes, it may say "Fantastico De Luxe." Don't worry it is the same thing. Much like saying "my room" and "my bedroom" ;)
3. Look for "Joomla" under the "Content Management" category of scripts in Fantastico and click on it. Also, note that the title 'Joomla' may sometimes have some numerical suffixes showing which version it is. For example, the title may read "Joomla 1.5" for version 1.5 of the CMS. Just click on the most recent version and go to the next step.
4. Look for the hyperlinked blue "New Installation" link and make sure you have at least as much as the minimum disk space required for you to install Joomla on your website. This is usually about 25 MB of disk space.
This is not usually
a problem, with most people's disk space running into the tens of gigabytes. But it is still good to make sure you have enough to hold a new Joomla installation.
5. Choose where on your website you want to install Joomla. Will it be on your main domain, an existing sub-domain or a new not-yet-existing sub-domain or directory? Indicate it in this part of the installation process.
6. Fill out other required fields that are required to smoothly install Joomla on the site. This includes creating an Admin username and password. Don't choose 'Admin' and 'password' as your username and password. Many people do this and have been hacked. Also, fill out the site name or main keyword, email address and other details here.
Then click the "Install Joomla" button.
7. On the next page, make sure that all the needed information is correct. Also, note down your Admin username, password and backend page (the one that ends with /administrator).
Finally, hit that "Finish Installation" of a button.
Voila! You have just learned how to install Joomla on your website. This should usually take only 1 or 2 minutes at most. After all, all you are doing is just hitting buttons, except for when choosing a username, etc.
If it still sounds a little like "nerd talk" (with all due respect to all the nerds out there ;) ), you can watch the video version of this article where you see the Joomla installation done live on the screen and see if you can learn how to install Joomla after that.

That made no sense at all. I have a website that is run by Joomla and for one, if you type in "http://www.mydomainname.com/controlpanel", in the web broweser, it goes nowhere. It should end in something like, .php, .html or something to that effect to begin with. I have another site using a different program and when I sign into that hosting account, there is nothing like what is desribed above. I also have Joomla downloaded to that hosting server and looked throught the files and they say nothing like "controlpanel" or "Fantastico" in the Joomla files. It sounds like some steps where missed. If I read the description above incorrectly, please, let me know. My site (not using Joomla) is OhWhatTheHell.com and there is an email page on there, as well. Let me know if I'm reading your instructions wrong. Thank you.

Del,
I understand you may not be familiar with some of the features described above. The "Control Panel" is actually your hosting account's Admin area where you control and access functions of your site, like checking stats, creating email accounts, etc. The "Fantastico" feature is just one of the features that are available from your website's admin area. But it is also possible that your hosting company does not have the "Fantastico" feature. You may want to watch a video of the process that I explained above. The video (and some more) is available on www.joomlasultan.com/inst all-joomla/46-how-to-uplo ad-install-joomla-15-on-y our-website . Also, note that there are other ways of installing Joomla (in addition to the one explained in this article). You can find this in the full 4-Hour video package "Joomla Websites Unleashed", available from http://joomlasultan.com/j oomla-websites-unleashed . If you need more help, just send me an email through the "Contact Us" page on the site and I will be more than glad to help. Regards, Muhammad Jalloh |

What is the benefit of using Joomla over Wordpress? I use wordpress and I did install Joomla on a domain, but I couln't find as many plugins to install to help me. I use Godaddy Hosting wich solves all of the install issues. There are none.

Nice article..
But not all the control panels have the features as you mentioned in this article. We(http://www.hexadesigners.com) are Joomla based web developers.. we mostly use the way as per your article if the hosting supports joomla install or we will use different method(upload and install). This article will be useful for those who have the feature to install joomla from their cpanel. Also, they can get joomla templates from the following website: joomlart.com, rockettheme.com. etc. If they need any custom / unique template they can contact us contact (@) hexadesigners.com or similar developers.. :-) |

My web hosting service (enom) uses Parallels Plesk control panel and I could find no mention of Fantastico. They offer a free CMS called Web Site Creator. Do you think that's why there's no Fantastico/Joomla?

Not a bad article but a little short on substance. Perhaps newbies would be more comfortable watching an instructional video if they are not familiar with using a control panel.

My main host does not have the Fantastico installer in the control panel (or it's just visible to me!) however anyone can get a free acount with xtreemhost.com who do have Fantastico and Joomla as one of the available options. I have been 'playing' with the Joomla install, however once it's installed there is a steep learning curve to get the site looking how you want.

This article still didn't explain what Joomla is and how it can help. In addition, my Control Panel is not at ...catalog.com/controlpanel, mine is located at ...catalog.com:11111<--port number (11111 used as an example)

SInce it hasn't been answered.. JOOMLA is a Content Management System.. which is to say~ it maintains the structure you want for a content based web system that can be a portal, a community, or what have you. Content Management Systems are becoming very popular for member loyalty, tracking, and simplifying the deployment of information. JOOMLA is one of many "flavours" available.
If you have access to your CPanel, poke around a bit. There might be something called "Install Central" or "Fantastico" .. if you click on that (nothing bad will happen) you will be provided with a list of possible installs. JOOMLA will be (most likely.. but not universally) listed as one such an item. You will, also, see things like COPPERMINE, OS COMMERCE, and TYPE 03 ... all options link to the main sites so that you can learn more about each one (usually). As the user of the provided services.. you might not be able to access that. Most likely, your friend set you up with a small portion of his/ her own package and let's you access the back end of that system. Talk to your friend.. find out what you have available. If your friend doesn't give you much insight.. think about taking your site elsewhere.. managing your own site isn't a big hurdle if you take it in baby steps. |

warning:
I've installed using Fantastico.. there are hurdles that you might need to be aware of before venturing down that path... the big problem I found was that when an update to the software became available, FANTASTICO virtually forced me to do an upgrade. The upgrade killed functionality of one module (I use XOOPS.. another CMS available through most FANTASTICO powered sites.. I think) and it's my membership payment/ member upgrade system. So, that's a no- go for me. No Go! So, I had to manually reconfigure their FANTASTICO tracking system to make it think the systems had been updated.. when they hadn't. Also.. when I updated, all my modules.. everything was gone. I had to re- install all of my custom uploaded modules, content.. everything. On a site that hosts nearly 10,000 photos~ thats a lot of work. I opted for the old school unpack/ upload/ install method. But, some people aren't familiar with it. If you find you need help with Fantastico or your sites.. don't hesitate to email me for assistance. I'm only a click away and more than happy to help. |

So... do you mean "joomla is better than fantastico"? Really I never use them both. Really... I want to try. I ever try joomla once in my life and when I try to upload the file to the hosting (cos I instal it first on my local computer), it makes me crazy, as there are so many error, and i decided to never use it again till today. But so many of my friends told me that it is very helpful, but not that easy. So i prefer to make a website from scratch. I know,it needs more time if we make a website from nothing. If we use joomla, than we already have template etc. But lucky if when we upload the file to the hosting is going well, but if it is happen as what I experienced? So, please help me,cos I really want to try joomla. This is my email if anyone can help: simri_n@yahoo.com Thank you guys.

Does not apply to systems outside the scope of Fantastico -- whatever the heck that is. If you're going to write learn to write these types of instructions so that they work on generic systems. e.g. I have a Control Panel however I do not have a "smiley icon that says "'Fantastico'". So now what? comes immediately to mind. If you are going to write this stuff at least give it a title that tells the reader "Learn How to Install Joomla On Fantasico in Less Than 5 Minutes". I also amazed that esitesecrets.com would even publish this. Too biased towards a specific hosting site to use the title above. So I give the author a poor rating and the editors/publishers.

If you are using something like OS Commerce, there is module development to pull the data into the JOOMLA structure. This, however, is above the level of coding that is being discussed here. You'd have to go to the JOOMLA website and poke around to find out what you see...
The best way, of course, would be to make a fresh install of JOOMLA and then use one of the shopping carts that are made to fit within it. This, again, might not be very appealing |

I'm not going to download, or program anything onto my web pages until I know what it does or what it's for. It was a well written article, but truly missing important factors.

I've installed many JOOMLA instances through CPanel.. I just don't understand the need for this tutorial? If the user has the ability to log into CPanel.. then they should have the ability to moderate their own site in a manner that they see fit.
Also.. what about the installation of JOOMLA without CPanel? If your hosting account doesn't have it or if you choose not to use the CPanel features? Finally, as mentioned, I've installed many JOOMLA instances. This tutorial seems targetted at the emerging web property owner. And, in my opinion, XOOPS is an easier system for someone to use who happens to be in that stratification. The modularity makes it easier to understand. BTW.. all of my JOOMLA installations have been removed in favor of XOOPS. |

Why do people always assume that everybody knows what they are talking about, What is joomla and what does it do? I have never heard of it, but i get a email saying how to install joomla on my site in less than 5 minutes but neglects to tell me what joomla is and what it does.

Joomla seems really easy to install. Does it matter the type of website - for example an ecommerce website. Is it better to build a website and then then install Joomla or just learn how to build a site with Joomla right away. What do you think?

My main host does not have the Fantastico installer in the control panel (or it's just visible to me!) however anyone can get a free acount with xtreemhost.com who do have Fantastico and Joomla as one of the available options. I have been 'playing' with the Joomla install, however once it's installed there is a steep learning curve to get the site looking how you want.

said this on 28 Apr 2010 11:02:22 AM CST

I totally understood how to install it from my cpanel, but the question remains Why would I. The instructions were really good, the reasons where not there, what does this do?

THIS GUIDE FOR ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE FREE DAY AND NIGHT
IF YOU REALLY WANT TO MAKE SOME GOOD MONEY THEN JUST FOLLOW MY STEPS 1. GO TO THIS WEBSITE http://tinyurl.com/ccauaf7 2. CREATE AN ACCOUNT OVER THERE 3. DO THE SURVEYS OVER THERE( EACH SURVEY DONT TAKE MORE THAN 3 SECONDS). 4. AND EACH SURVEYS GIVES YOU AROUND $2-$6 AND EACH MONTH YOU GET A NEW SURVEY TO DO. 5. WHEN ALL THE SURVEYS ARE OVER. GO TO THE REDEEM MONEY OPTION. AND THEN YOU NEED A PAYPAL OR AN ALERTPAY ACCOUNT TO REDEEM MONEY. 6. TO CREATE A PAYPAL ACCOUNT GO TO paypal.com. TO CREATE A ALERTPAY ACCOUNT GO TO alertpay.com 7. AFTER CREATING THE ACCOUNT ON ANY OF THE ACOVE TWO SITES. CLICK ON THE REDEEM MONEY OPTION AND CHOOSE PAYPAL OR ALERTPAY 8. ENTER THE AMOUNT YOU WANT TO WITHDRAW. 9. AND WITHING 5 BUSINESS DAYS, YOU WILL GET THE MONEY IN YOUR PAYPAL OR ALERTPAY ACCOUNT. 10. AND THAT'S IT. NOW YOU CAN USE THIS MONEY TO DO ONLINE SHOPPING OR CAN EVEN WITHDRAW THIS MONEY USING A CREDIT CARD OR BANK ACCOUNT. IT IS 100% SAFE BUT IF STILL YOU DON'T WANT ANY RISK THEN YOU DO ONLINE SHOPPING WITH IT. LIKE BUYING SOFTWARES OR GAMES OR EVEN A WEBSITE !!! I USED THIS ABOVE METHOD AROUND 7 TIMES AND IT HAD ALWAYS WORKED FOR ME AND NOW I HAVE MORE THAN $221 IN MY PAYPAL ACCOUNT.. IT IS THE MOST EASIES AND LEGAL WAY TO GET AN RAPIDSHARE OR MEGAUPLOAD PREMIUM ACCOUNT. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME THEN GIVE IT A TRY YOURSELF.. |

Joomla seems really easy to install. Does it matter the type of website - for example an ecommerce website. Is it better to build a website and then then install Joomla or just learn how to build a site with Joomla right away. What do you think?
